To be Unveiled at The Research House for Asian Art

Sep. 21 – Oct. 17, 2018

CHICAGO, September 21, 2018 - The Research House for Asian Art (RHAA) is pleased topresent “A CITY TO WEAR 2.0,” a group show featuring selected Chicago-basedpainters and painters from Asian cities like Beijing and Tokyo. It opens onFriday, the September 21st, the opening reception will be from 7pmto 9 pm, and closes on October 17th. Admission is free and open to thepublic.  This exhibition is co-curated by Yidan Pang and Linglin Yan.

A CITY TOWEAR 2.0 aims to examine the argument that the painting now is to “act on thepainting”, rather than using it to represent contents and narratives, and itseeks to find paintings beyond “painting”, to explore that what kind of newpossibilities is available for artists to create in paintings nowadays, withtheir experience of place and time.  Whether to use painting as a medium,or as a context for experience, the paintings beyond painting demonstrate thatpainting nowadays is not the resurgence of the tradition, but a constantlychanging definition that push the boundaries and bring in new possibilities. There are works of three ink painters included in this show, and the reason forthat is the ink painting is traditionally considered none easel-painting, thusit faces a double challenge in the contemporary art world. In 2014, A CITY TO WEAR, an exhibition held by Research House for Asian Art,explored the idea of how painters relate to their medium while being in thecity and asked the question that why one would still be painting in Chicago, and why painting at present? Four years later, A CITY TO WEAR 2.0 continues toask the critical questions on painting by inviting painters from Asia toparticipate. RHAA also plans to have the show to be hold every several years incelebrating of emerging artists’ works focusing on the embodiment of place andtime and follows up the latest practice of the cutting-edge painting.
